Hazen
is located in Mercer County in west-central North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 2,457 residents. Due to its close proximity to the city of Beulah, Hazen is rarely mentioned alone, but rather as Hazen-Beulah. As of the 2000 census, the town of Beulah's population was 3,152. Hazen-Beulah is only a half hour from Lake Sakakawea, which is the largest lake in North Dakota. The Hazen Bay Recreational Area, located on Lake Sakakawea, is about 15 miles north of Hazen and includes two boat ramps and a boat dock, fishing, swimming and picnic areas. Lake Sakakawea State Park, which is approximately 30 miles north of Hazen-Beulah, is known for its sailing opportunities and other water recreational activities. Camping is also available at the state park. Other attractions near Hazen include the historic Knife River Indian Village and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan Historic Site. Several special events are also held in Hazen-Beulah, including fishing derbies, the Mercer County Fair, festivals and arts and crafts fairs.

Central North Dakota is located in the Great Plains region and has a four-season climate classified as semi-arid continental. The weather is characterized by long, cold, snowy sub-arctic-like winters. In sharp contrast, summers are warm to hot. Like most states in the northern Great Plains, it is also fairly dry, although thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. There can also be occasional periods of extreme heat and humidity in summertime. The warmest month is typically July and the coldest month is January. Spring and autumn are short and variable in the Great Plains. The wettest month is June and the driest month is December. Other possible weather events in central North Dakota can include hail, blizzards, polar fronts, tornadoes and high winds.
