Stanton is a town in Mercer County in south-central North Dakota. It had a population of 345 residents at the 2000 census. Stanton is home to the Knife River Indian Villages, which is a National Historic Site. The Knife River Indian Villages contain a Hidatsa earth lodge and three abandoned villages. One of these villages, Awatixa, is believed to have been the former home of Sakakawea, the Shoshone Indian woman who accompanied the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site was established in 1974 and preserves the historic and archaeological remnants of the Northern Plains Indians. This area was a major trading and agricultural area for the Indians. A Kids Camp is held at the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site during the month of July for youths ages 6-12. For four hours a week, children can hear stories, enjoy crafts and other activities and learn about conservation, tipi raising, canoeing and earth lodge building. The Villages are open daily year round and offers exhibits, programs and special events. The town of Stanton also serves as the county seat for Mercer County.
